What Does Certified Pre-Owned Mean?
You’ve most likely noticed the words “certified pre-owned” as you look at used cars for sale. Paying closer attention reveals that not every used car sold at Allen Turner Chevrolet is listed as a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle, but that’s not to say we’re trying to sell you a bad used car. We thoroughly inspect all our used vehicles and include the Carfax report so you know what you’re buying.
In contrast, a CPO vehicle is one that meets specific criteria, has been inspected and reconditioned, and gets a strong warranty. You can be sure you’re getting a pre-owned vehicle that’s almost as good as brand new when you buy a certified used car from us at Allen Turner Chevrolet in Crestview, Florida.
What Is Chevrolet’s Certified Pre-Owned Program?
For a used Chevrolet to qualify for Chevrolet’s Certified Pre-Owned Program, it must meet specific criteria, undergo a series of inspections, be checked for recalls, and be reconditioned to a like-new condition before it can be put on the lot for sale. It also provides two warranties backed by Chevrolet, giving you peace of mind that you’re buying a reliable car that the manufacturer supports.
How a Used Chevrolet Qualifies for CPO Status
A used Chevrolet must meet certain requirements before it’s considered a candidate for the CPO program. For example, it must:
- Be within six model years of the current year.
- Have fewer than 75,000 miles on the odometer.
- Have a clean title and vehicle history report through Carfax®.
A vehicle must meet all three of these criteria to qualify to be certified. If the vehicle fails to meet one of the criteria, it won’t be entered into the CPO program.
What Goes Into Making a Chevrolet CPO Vehicle
The first step a qualifying vehicle undergoes is making sure all recall notices are addressed and resolved before it undergoes a full inspection. It can sometimes happen that a Chevrolet vehicle has a recall that affects its safe operation. Fixing the recall issues sets the vehicle up for the inspection process and ensures the final result is a car that’s safe, ultra-reliable, and ready to perform for its next owner.
After resolving the recall issues, the vehicle goes on to the next stage, which consists of a 172-point inspection.
How the Inspection Process Brings the Chevy Vehicle to a Like-New Condition
The inspection checklist is made up of 172 essential points that the technician must look at as they go over the car. The major sections of the checklist include the following:
- Vehicle history check.
- Maintenance.
- Brake pads and tires.
- Detailing of interior and exterior.
- Road test performance.
- Functionality of auxiliary items.
- Under vehicle inspection.
- Interior.
- Exterior.
- Hybrid vehicle check.
The checklist is designed to ensure the technician inspects the vehicle’s major and minor features. That means items such as the brakes, transmission, and suspension are looked at. The list prompts the technician to also look at and check the condition of features such as the horn, the stereo/infotainment system, and trim elements. As the technician inspects each of these points, they make a note of their condition and advise on whether service is required.
Anything that needs servicing, no matter whether it’s an HVAC item or a button on the dashboard, is repaired or replaced, depending on its condition. The overall goal of the checklist is to return a qualifying vehicle to as close to perfect as possible. This also gives you, the buyer of a CPO vehicle, peace of mind knowing that you’re getting a used car that’s been reconditioned, has brand-new parts where they’re needed, and provides reliability that lasts after you drive off the lot.
Two Warranties Support Your Vehicle Long After You Bought It
The CPO program also provides two warranties to cover your car after purchase. You get a 12-month/12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and a 6-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. Both feature a $0 deductible.
Both these warranties are limited, meaning there are exclusions in coverage. The exclusions in the bumper-to-bumper warranty are ones typically covered by insurance, while the powertrain warranty covers the engine, drivetrain, and drive systems. It’s also transferrable to subsequent owners for the life of the warranty.
You’re covered for repairs if any of these problems arise as the result of a defect that was introduced into the car at the time of its manufacture.
Additional Benefits of Buying a CPO Vehicle
All Chevrolets listed on the gmcertified.com website come with a free Carfax® report, allowing you to learn more about the vehicle’s maintenance and repair history. The report shows you whether the car has been in an accident, undergone repairs, or had any issues with its title. You can base your decision to buy a CPO on the information contained in the report.
Another perk of buying a CPO vehicle is that you can enjoy a free three-month trial of OnStar. OnStar consists of a Safety & Security Plan and Connected Services that include remote access to your vehicle through a smartphone app. You’re not obligated to continue the service once the trial period is over.
Last but not least, three months of SiriusXM satellite radio service is also included with your purchase. You can listen to a wide variety of entertainment channels, including talk, news, and just about every genre of music. There’s also no obligation to continue the service after the trial period expires.
