Truck Showdown: The Chevrolet Silverado Vs. The Ford F-150

January 9th, 2023 by

When you think of a pickup truck, either the Ford F-150 or the Chevy Silverado probably comes to mind. These two trucks aren’t only the most popular trucks on the market today, but they also have a significant number of loyal fans backing either of them. With so much potential bias, it can be hard to determine objectively which of the two trucks comes out on top. Today, we’ll compare the 2023 versions of both the F-150 and the Silverado to see which one wins in a head-to-head showdown.

What’s New in the 2023 Chevy Silverado and the 2023 Ford F-150?

2023 Chevy Silverado

While the two trucks are constantly vying for the number one spot, neither the 2023 Ford F-150 nor the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado brings many wildly new elements to the table. Instead, they largely maintain what has so far made them such strong players in the truck game, including their distinct appearance, notable power and performance, and versatile features.

The biggest difference seen in the 2023 versions of both trucks is the addition of an off-road trim level — the Rattler variant for the Ford F-150 and the ZR2 AEV Bison variant for the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Aside from slight price differences, the F-150 and the Silverado have a reasonably level playing field when it comes to their benefits and drawbacks.

Interior Design

The spacious interior of the 2023 Ford F-150, which seats six, is made exclusively of premium materials. With convenient features such as a fold-out interior workspace and a stowaway gear shift, there’s plenty of room for work on the go. There are also many storage spots throughout the cab and a standard 8-inch touch-screen display.

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado’s interior, which also seats six, is similarly luxurious, with a standard 7-inch touch-screen display or an optional 13.4-inch display with built-in Google capability. You have the choice between black vinyl or black cloth interior on the standard trim level of the Silverado, with the option to upgrade to a variety of other interior styles, such as beige or gray-accented.

Exterior Design

Both the Ford F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado have distinctive looks that lend to their cult following. Not much has changed about these trucks’ signature styles in the 2023 versions. The Ford F-150 offers a tailgate work surface feature and a variety of bed sizes. There’s also an optional XL Chrome Appearance Package, adding chrome accents across the exterior, as well as front fog lights. The Silverado offers multiple exterior customization options, including the wheels, grille, and bumpers, as well as power-retractable assist steps. Each truck has several special editions for even more unique exterior styling options.

Power and Performance

The power and performance of the F-150 and the Silverado are where you can truly begin to make definitive comparisons between the two. On its standard models, the Silverado’s engine produces more power — it has a 2.7-liter turbo high-output engine and an eight-speed transmission, producing 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the standard version of the F-150 has a 3.3-liter Ti-VCT V-6 engine that can make 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.

The F-150 does have more options for engine upgrades, however, including a hybrid engine. The Silverado, on the other hand, doesn’t currently offer an electric or hybrid version, although a Silverado EV is expected to launch in 2024. Still, comparing the base models, the Silverado continues to display more power: the Silverado can tow up to 13,300 pounds with a maximum payload of 2,260 pounds, whereas the F-150 can tow up to 8,200 pounds with a maximum payload of 1,985 pounds.

Safety Features

In terms of safety, the F-150 and the Silverado provide comparable features on the standard versions of their 2023 models. The F-150 has front- and seat-mounted side airbags, as well as Safety Canopy side curtain airbags. There are four-wheel anti-lock brakes and the standard three-point safety belt Active Restraint System. Plus, the F-150 features AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, as well as Curve Control to remain upright in the case of sharp turns or swerves.

The Silverado also has front- and seat-mounted side airbags, as well as head curtain airbags. The standard Chevy Safety Assist platform includes automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist with lane departure warning, forward collision alert, automatic high beams, and a following-distance indicator. Also standard are the Buckle to Drive and Teen Driver technologies. There are plenty of safety upgrades on both trucks to add as an option, such as cross-traffic alert on the F-150 and HD surround vision cameras on the Silverado.

Pricing and Value

The 2023 Chevy Silverado is a bit more expensive than the 2023 Ford F-150. Where the F-150 has a starting MSRP of $33,695 for its standard version, the Silverado has a starting MSRP of $35,600. Even still, with nine trim options on the Silverado and eight on the F-150, there’s plenty of room to customize your truck to your own budgetary needs. Overall, the price differences aren’t significant enough to move the scale one way or the other when making a decision.

Which Truck Should I Buy?

So, how do you decide between the Ford F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado when it comes to their 2023 editions? Although both trucks remain comparable in most areas, your choice will depend on the primary reasons you’re making your purchase. If you plan to use your truck for on-site work, the F-150 might be your preferred choice with its provided workspaces and range of add-on options. However, if safety and convenience are your priorities, the Silverado comes out on top with its several features included as standard. Consider what you prioritize in a truck to help make your decision.
