At Rise Dance Center, the instructors seek to expose children to the arts through several different dance styles and techniques. Kids can participate in a nine-month schedule of weekly lessons to help them appreciate what their bodies can learn to do.

Dance styles include:

  • Acro: A gymnastics-based class that helps build strength, balance, and flexibility.
  • Ballet: A classic form that’s considered foundational for all other types of dance, focusing on proper alignment and movement.
  • Contemporary: Modern, lyrical, and other styles that include expressionism and fluidity of movement.
  • Hip-hop: An energetic dance style set to contemporary hip-hop music and that incorporates faster and more intricate choreography with lots of personality.
  • Jazz: Incorporates the classical training of ballet movement with a more upbeat style.
  • Tap: Brings rhythmic sound from special shoes and choreography.

In addition to the regularly scheduled classes, Rise Dance Center offers summer camp programs for kids ages 3 years and up.

Location: 4489 Commons Drive W., Suite A-B, Destin.

Ballet students at Studio6twenty5 are taught using the American Ballet Theatre’s National Training Curriculum. This program focuses on high-level ballet training with a proper focus on dancer health and development. Dancers study according to an age-appropriate training curriculum with outcome-based guidelines. This ensures that children of all ages receive focused and foundational skills. Registration for classes follows the academic school year.

Children from ages 2 to 5 years start in pre-primary ballet classes that run through the academic school year. Instructors informally introduce basic ballet skills while encouraging creative movement and play. These classes are appropriate for both boys and girls.

Primary ballet classes start for boys and girls from ages 5 to 8 years. These classes involve more structure and defined footwork and focus on moving to music and spatial awareness.

Studio6twenty5 also offers a variety of classes for adult and teenage students ages 12 years and up. Beginner- and intermediate-level dancers take classes in open ballet, pointe, or jazz, along with barre+ classes, which use ballet movements and body-weight exercises for an intense 60-minute full-body workout.

Location: 625 Harbor Blvd., (Upstairs), Destin.

Alfonso Academy

Alfonso Academy in nearby Miramar Beach began as a daytime advanced training program for dancers seeking a professional career. It expanded into an evening program for dancers ages 2 years and up. With its own pre-professional dance company, New Light Dance Project, the academy seeks to serve dancers of all ages and abilities.

The daytime dance education curriculum helps dancers develop their personal artistry with training in the following styles:

  • Ballet.
  • Pointe.
  • Jazz.
  • Technique.
  • Progressing Ballet Technique.
  • Modern/Contemporary.
  • Improv Lab.
  • Dance Composition.

The New Light Dance Project is for kids ages 6 to 18 years and provides exposure to the world of working for a professional dance company while building technique and strength. The dance company performs locally, regionally, and nationally and provides opportunities for dancers to network with professionals and artists in the industry.

New dancers in the after-school and evening classes can choose from training in pre-ballet, ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, dance fundamentals, and beginner pointe. Tuition is charged monthly according to the number of classes the dancer attends, along with a one-time registration fee.

Luna Ballroom

Whether you’re interested in learning how to waltz at your upcoming wedding or adding to your salsa skills, the dance instructors at Luna Ballroom are ready to help get you moving. Other styles of ballroom dance include:

  • Samba.
  • Two-step.
  • Foxtrot.
  • Tango.
  • Hustle.
  • Merengue.
  • Cha-cha.
  • Rumba.
  • East and West Coast swing.
  • Quickstep.
  • Argentine tango.
  • Bolero.

The introductory lesson can be your first foray into ballroom dance. It’s a 20-minute class that combines dancing and discussion with the instructor about your goals, prior experience, and further dance class options. From there, you can try out a group class (no partner required) in a welcoming setting alongside other dancers of all levels. Private lessons may be more your style, where you work one-on-one with a trained instructor for 40 minutes. You can choose the style of dance you want to learn or perfect, or the instructor can help you discover where you’re most talented.

In the wedding choreography class, you and your fiancé choose the song, and the instructor will help choreograph a dance to help you feel prepared for that first dance on your wedding day. Once you feel more confident, you can join a social party and meet new friends or participate in a showcase to really demonstrate your newfound skills in front of a live audience.

Beginner classes are designed to help you build up the strength for higher-level classes.

The studio offers classes using aerial silks, pole dance/fitness, aerial sling/hammock, lyra/hoop, aerial rope, and flexibility and conditioning classes to help develop the skills necessary for aerial arts. Most classes are designed for adults, but there are some classes catered to kids ages 8 to 17 years. The studio also hosts kids’ birthday parties, bachelorette parties, and summer camp classes.
