Allen Turner’s Picks: The Top Chevrolet Models for 2022

A great deal of anticipation hung around Chevrolet in the lead-up to the 2022 model year. When the lineup came out, it didn’t disappoint. Let’s look at the highlights of Chevy’s 2022 lineup by closely examining its best-regarded models.

The Chevrolet Corvette, now in production for almost 70 years, is an icon in the auto industry. The long-running line saw a significant redesign in 2019, and the 2022 Stingray truly helps to cement its claim to supercar status. This two-seat performance vehicle comes in three trim levels — 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT — each available in either a coupe or a convertible configuration. Opt for the latter, and you get a folding hard top. Even with the coupe configuration, you can detach the roof panel and stow it in the trunk.

Under the hood, you get a 6.2-liter V-8 DI engine with 490 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Choosing the available Performance Exhaust or Z51 Performance Package, you can raise the performance to 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. With that kind of power, you’re looking at a potential zero-to-60 time of under three seconds. The engine pairs with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which you control through a push-button shift console or shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Even with its performance-oriented design and mechanics, the 2022 Corvette Stingray remains suitably versatile for daily driving. It offers a lush, comfortable interior and a fuel economy of up to 24 mpg on the highway. Also, with a starting MSRP of $64,200, it’s a relatively affordable entry into supercar territory.

Camaro

An even more affordable option in the performance vehicle segment is the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro, which has eight available trims, four powertrain options, and a starting MSRP of $25,000. All trims, except the base-model 1LS, are available in both coupe and convertible configurations.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged engine generating 275 horsepower is standard for the 1LS, 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT trims. Aside from the 1LS, each can upgrade to a 3.6-liter V-6 with 335 horsepower. The LT1, 1SS, and 2SS trims come standard with a 6.2-liter V-8 DI with 455 horsepower. For maximum performance, you may want to look into the ZL1, which has a 6.2-liter LT4 supercharged V-8 that puts out 650 horsepower — ferocious enough to get you from zero to 60 mph in under four seconds.

Depending on your trim and powertrain option, you can expect to get between 26 and 30 mpg on the highway. That, along with its fun, enthusiastic handling and lower-cost entry point, certainly makes it a great option for daily driving.

Tahoe

If you’re looking for a marriage of power, utility, and interior space, it’s hard to beat the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe — an ongoing leader in the class of full-size SUVs. The Tahoe is a giant at 210.7 inches long, 81 inches wide, and 75.8 inches tall. Its tremendous interior matches its exterior dimensions. The three-row cabin has a passenger volume of 178 cubic feet. With second-row captain’s chairs, you can easily seat seven people. Even the rearmost row offers around 36.7 inches of legroom.

Then there’s the cargo space. You get 25.5 cubic feet with all three rows in place, which is more than ample for luggage or groceries. Folding the third row down expands the cargo area to 72.6 cubic feet, and sinking the second row increases it to 122.9 cubic feet.

The power under the hood is likewise tremendous. Across six trim levels, you have three powertrain options: a 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8, a 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8, and a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel that generates 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The minimum standard towing capacity for any Tahoe trim and powertrain configuration is 7,600 pounds. At the maximum, you’re looking at 8,400 pounds.

The model’s infotainment options, compounded with its interior, make it a terrific choice for family road trips. In addition to an 8-inch or 10.2-inch touch screen in the center stack — integrated with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a Wi-Fi hotspot — you have various charging ports arranged around the cabin. A rear-seat entertainment system also puts dual 12.6-inch monitors behind the front-row seats. Also, with up to 28 mpg on the highway, you’re getting some decent fuel economy for a full-size SUV.

Suburban

If you feel that bigger is better, the 2022 Suburban may be the preferable option compared to the Tahoe. Chevy’s other full-size SUV measures 225.7 inches long, 81.1 inches wide, and 75.7 inches tall, making it one of the largest non-commercial vehicles on the market.

The passenger volume is similar to the Tahoe’s, measuring 176 cubic feet. Still, the cabin offers even more legroom — 44.5 inches in the first row, 42 inches in the second, and 36.7 inches in the third. The Suburban is also the clear winner in terms of cargo space. You’re looking at 41.5 cubic feet behind the third row alone, and behind the second and first, you get 93.8 and 144.7 cubic feet, respectively. There’s little that the Suburban can’t accommodate for the average driver.

The powertrain options also match those of the Tahoe, which is appropriate for propelling this ship of a vehicle. Given its size, you may be impressed to learn the Suburban gets up to 27 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city.
