2023 Chevrolet Tahoe Vs. 2023 Ford Expedition

Both the 2023 Tahoe and 2023 Expedition are three-row SUVs that promise a smooth ride and exceptional interior space. Despite them being similar, there are several things that you can consider when choosing between them. Keep reading to discover how they compare in key aspects, such as features, performance, technology, design, and price.

Trim Options

The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe is available in six trim levels: the LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. The standard LS trim includes eight-passenger seating and many useful features, such as 18-inch wheels, a six-speaker audio system, LED headlights, an 8-inch touch-screen interface, and wireless smartphone connectivity through Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

Higher trims add more features while also improving some standard ones. They also allow you to configure your Tahoe in a way that fits your needs and lifestyle. For instance, the Z71 trim enhances off-road capability, while the High Country trim focuses on luxury and on-road performance.

Although the 2023 Ford Expedition’s standard trim is also well equipped, one big minus is that it only seats up to five passengers. If you need more than five seats, you’ll have to choose a higher trim. The available trims are the XL STX, XLT, XLT MAX, Timberline, Limited, Limited MAX, King Ranch, King Ranch MAX, Platinum, and Platinum MAX. Some notable standard features include a 12-inch touch screen and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

Performance

Both vehicles have multiple engine options to choose from. The 2023 Tahoe’s standard engine is a 5.3-liter V-8 with up to 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. It pushes the Tahoe to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in 7.7 seconds. If you feel you need more power, the 6.2-liter V-8 can deliver it to you. It produces 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a diesel version, with 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Towing performance is also relevant for a large SUV, with the Tahoe’s towing capacity being 8,400 pounds.

The 2023 Expedition’s base engine is a turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 with up to 380 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. There are two upgraded V-6 engines available, with one producing 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque and the other generating up to 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. Despite the Expedition having slightly better horsepower, its turbocharged engines require more expensive premium gasoline, so the superior performance comes at a price.

Interior and Exterior Design

The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe has an imposing exterior look that fits its size. There are also multiple colors  to choose from, including popular ones like Sterling Grey, Auburn, Radiant Red, and Empire Beige. The interior design manages to blend looks, comfort, and functionality.  Outward visibility is excellent, and the complex camera system helps the driver notice any objects that may not be directly visible due to the tall ride height.

The 2023 Ford Expedition has a similarly imposing figure. However, despite the two being similar in size, the Expedition’s exterior look seems a little more outdated and boxy than the Tahoe’s. On the interior, there’s plenty of room for both passengers and cargo, although its standard version can only seat five compared to the Tahoe’s eight.

Safety Features

Given that most people who buy three-row SUVs have large families, safety is crucial. Both come with multiple advanced driver aids that can help the driver avoid any unwanted event in the first place. Some standard safety features on the Tahoe are the forward collision mitigation system, which issues a warning in case of an impending frontal collision, and the lane departure mitigation system, which helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane.

The 2023 Ford Expedition also comes with standard forward collision warning and a lane-keeping system, as part of the Ford Co-Pilot360 package. In addition, it includes a blind-spot monitor with a cross-traffic alert that helps the driver notice any incoming traffic from either side when backing up. Both vehicles have more optional active safety systems, including adaptive cruise control.

Technology

Both vehicles come with plenty of standard infotainment features to keep everyone entertained and informed throughout long road trips. This includes rear seat entertainment systems with monitors embedded in headrests, which passengers in the back seats can use for music, games, and others. Also, both vehicles have self-driving tech options, allowing the driver to take their hands off the wheel and let the vehicle steer, accelerate, and brake on its own.

Price

The starting MSRP for the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe is $59,095 for the LS trim. This goes up to $79,295 for the top-of-the-range High Country. The 2023 Ford Expedition’s starting MSRP is $55,725 for the base XL STX. The difference in price between the two grows at higher trims, with the Platinum MAX having an MSRP of $85,815. This price difference, plus the fact that you’re likely to spend more on gas when driving the Expedition, makes the Chevrolet Tahoe a better choice when it comes to value for your money.
