Although there are a number of pickup trucks in the full-size truck segment, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 remains near the top of the list. It’s a highly capable model that comes well-equipped with features for all types of needs. Whether you’re in the market for a truck that can keep up with all your work tasks, haul and tow heavy loads, or tackle rough terrain, this model can do it all.
Following a complete redesign in 2019, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 shows off bold styling and unique exterior elements that help it to stand out on the road. The 2022 model also received a few exterior enhancements, and the 2023 model year builds on those upgrades with several of its own. The front end shows off a massive grille, complemented by aggressive lighting and a lower grille. The base unit also includes a set of 17-inch steel wheels, a locking tailgate, and manually adjustable side mirrors.
As you move through the higher trims, you can outfit your truck with upgraded exterior options. These include larger alloy wheels, LED in-bed lighting, a power-locking and power-releasing tailgate with assisted lift, and power-adjustable and heated side mirrors. Luxury upgrades are also available, such as chrome trim, LED headlights and fog lights, power-folding side mirrors with auto-dimming functionality on the driver’s side, a spray-in bedliner, and running-board side assist steps.
The Silverado 1500 is an appealing model that comes in a wide array of trim levels. These include the WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, ZR2, LTZ, and High Country. The WT model is the most basic of the bunch, while the RST has a sporty appearance with a single-speed transfer case. For a more luxurious experience, opt for the LTZ or High Country to get premium features.
Chevy offers several trim levels that can keep up on rocky terrain if you plan to take your truck off the beaten path. The Custom Trail Boss is the first option, featuring standard four-wheel drive, underbody skid plates, 18-inch wheels outfitted with all-terrain tires, and a two-speed transfer case. Additionally, an automatic locking rear differential, upgraded shocks, and hill-descent control come standard. The truck sits two inches higher than the other trims.
Next up is the ZR2, which is highly focused on off-roading. It includes larger 33-inch all-terrain tires, upgraded skid plates, a full-size spare tire, and electronic locking front and rear differentials. Off-road-specific adaptive dampers also boost the ride quality when you’re on rough roads.
Buyers can choose from four different engine options on the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado. The first is a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It works with an eight-speed automatic transmission that powers the rear wheels on most trim levels. The next option is a 5.3-liter V-8 engine that makes 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. If that’s not enough power, choose the 6.2-liter V-8 engine that pumps out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Both V-8 engines pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Last up is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six Duramax unit rated at 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers mark an increase of 28 horsepower and 35 pound-feet of torque over the outgoing model. The added power comes from a few upgrades: new pistons with a revised combustion bowl, upgraded fuel injectors, and a returned turbo. Rear-wheel drive is standard on most models, although four-wheel drive is an optional upgrade.
Since Chevy offers three different cab options, it’s easy to get a truck with a cabin that accommodates your needs. The three configurations are called the two-door regular cab, four-door double cab, and four-door crew cab. With full-size rear doors and a spacious cabin, the crew cab is the most appealing choice if you need to transport adult passengers or children in car seats in the rear. However, different configurations are offered in the various trim levels.
Standard interior features on the base WT trim include vinyl upholstery, rubber floor coverings, manual climate control, and a manually adjustable driver’s seat. The Custom trim tacks on a few niceties like cloth upholstery, carpeted floors, and power accessories, while the LT features dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power and heated front seats.
The LT Trail Boss has most of those upgraded features, along with a heated steering wheel and a center console between the front bucket seats. With the LTZ, you get leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and a power-sliding rear window.
Even the base trim of the 2023 Silverado includes a two-speaker sound system, dual USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 7-inch touch screen. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration are standard as well. With the higher trims, upgraded tech options include a Wi-Fi hotspot, an upgraded sound system, a 13.4-inch touch screen, wireless device charging, and integrated navigation.
The WT comes with anti-lock brakes, a rearview camera, stability and traction control, and six airbags throughout the cabin. Additionally, Chevy includes active driver aids like forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with lane-keep assist, and Teen Driver settings. The Custom trim adds hitch guidance and OnStar emergency telematics.
With the upper trims, you can tack on features like front and rear parking sensors and an advanced trailering system. The Safety package offered on the LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss bundles blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, a surround-view camera system, and a trailer blind-spot monitoring system. The upper two trims are available with the Technology package, which includes a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, and a bed-view camera.
